3 Tips for Fast Tracking Your Accounting Career in 2014

Ah yes, the infamous New Year’s resolutions; promises we make, but invariably fail to keep. Whether it’s going to the gym more frequently, or committing ourselves to work/life balance, somehow, someway, we never quite get there.

But to move your accounting career into the fast lane, you need a plan, and an integral part of any good plan is goal setting. And so we humbly offer you three tips for fast tracking your accounting career in 2014.

Goal 1: Commit Yourself to Professional Development

With little time to spare, most of us cannot conceive of adding one more thing to the “to do” list. But in an industry that is constantly evolving and changing, you need to stay current and relevant. By committing yourself to taking even one additional course to upgrade your skill set, you send the message that you are invested in your accounting career and in offering value to your organization.

Goal 2: Commit Yourself to Networking

Even if you commit yourself to attending one networking event per month (or quarter), the dividends such a small investment of time will pay may surprise you. People who network and build real relationships have opportunities come to them.

Goal 3: Commit Yourself to Building Business Partnerships

By adopting an attitude of service in your interactions with your team, other departments and managers, you not only show that you are ready to go the extra mile, but potentially broaden your skill set, learn more about your company and position yourself for career advancement if there is an opportunity.

The new year is upon us and the chance to change our pattern of professional behaviour is here. Show your value by committing yourself to growing your skill set, networking periodically and building business partnerships. You may find at the end of the day that your accounting career is more fulfilling and heading in the direction that you want.
