Celebrate Successes
There’s nothing like a win to bring a team together. So if your team knocked it out of the park on an initiative, or a new systems implementation then celebrate together. Positive experiences improve morale and this fosters increased productivity.
Show Them Trust
As Theodore Roosevelt said, “The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good to do what he/she wants done, and the self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” Set goals for your team, give them the tools they need to succeed, and then let them work. You might be surprised how offering autonomy (still with accountability of course) can pay dividends.
Cast Them Correctly
At some point everyone on the team will have to roll up their sleeves and pitch in, regardless of their regular job description. But we know that people truly excel when they can leverage their strengths, so sit down with your team and make sure you’ve cast them in the right role. Is there something they could excel at and add value to if given the opportunity?
Mentor
Regardless of level, everyone can benefit from a mentor. Specifically we benefit most from constructive feedback offered in a timely fashion. Good Finance Managers want to see their teams succeed and mentoring helps to achieve this.
As you reflect on your skill set, keep in mind that people typically quit managers, not jobs. If you want your team to perform, then it’s imperative that you offer them the support they need to deliver. This means coaching them constructively, casting them correctly and celebrating successes together.
